Passion for Ancient Olympia

Happy Friday fashionistas! As promised, here I am sharing the photos from our recent visit to the Ancient Olympia. On our way to the Olympia Riviera Resort, my friend Maria and I were talking and we came to the conclusion that both of us have never actually been to the Ancient Olympia. Our last trip to the resort was 10 years ago, when we were both working for the same company. So we decided that it was a wise thing to do this time round and visit this magical place on the day of our departure.

Olympia is a sanctuary of ancient Greece in Elis, and is known as the birth place of the Olympic Games. The first Olympic Games were held in honour of Zeus. It is here that you will discover the Temple of Hera (this is where the torch of the Olympic flame is lit), the temple that was dedicated to Hera, goddess of women and marriage, and the wife of Zeus. She was one of the most important female deities in Greek religion. The Temple of Zeus was dedicated to the mythical god Zeus and it also housed the renowned statues of Zeus, which was one of the Seven Wonders of the Ancient World. In Ancient Greece, Olympia was sacred ground to the Greeks.

We also visited the Archaeological Museum of Olympia which houses artifacts found in the archaeological site of Ancient Olympia. The collections consist of terracottas from prehistoric, Archaic and Classical periods, collection of bronzes, sculptures and notable exhibits such as: The Hermes bearing the infant Dionysus by Praxiteles, The Nike of Paeonius, and so forth.
